Big List of Bad Boy Bikers

Motorcycle Man by Kristen Ashley 4/5

Tyra had a hot night in bed with the motorcycle man of her dreams. Before the after glow dims, he shows her the door. Too bad he will become her boss on monday. Kane "Tack" Allen does not sleep wit employees. He tells Tyra to hit the bricks. Tyra needs this job. Tack can just deal with it, as far as she is concerned. She doesn't plan on spending any more night in Tack's bed so they can pretend it never happened. The longer Tyra works there, the more Tack likes her. It isn't long before he decided to go back on his no employee rule. Tack doesn't come alone. He's the president of Chaos Motorcycle Club, has two teenage kids, and one crazy ex-wife. Taking Tack on means taking on extra baggage.
The perfect I was looking for wasn’t perfection. The perfect I was looking for was the one. And he was you.” - Tyra
I really like Tack. I wanted to hit him upside the head with a wrench, but I liked him. Tack is a major alpha male. If you are familiar with Kristen Ashley, this won't surprise you. Alpha males like Tack will walk all over you if you let them. Tyra is no man's doormat. She is not going to let Tack walk in and start dictating every part of her life. He respects that about her. Tack is like no other man Tyra has ever met. He exasperates her but also thrills her. This was my first Kristen Ashley title. I am now the proud owner of many Kirsten Ashley books. My to be read pile overflows.

Own the Wind by Kristen Ashley 4/5

Tabby is the daughter of Kane "Tack" Allen. We met her in Motorcycle Man as a teenager. Tabby has been crushing on Shy, a member of Chaos Motorcycle Club since she was sixteen. The books hops around through a span of several years. It is necessary to tell the full story of Tab and Shy. Shy and Tabby are complicated. As I write this review, I am having a hard time summing up their story. It was a roller coaster. I loved every minute of it. I laughed, I sobbed, the sex was out of this world hot, the dialogue was a blast to read. I am eager to read the next Chaos book. Rush, Tabby's brother, is who I am most impatient to read. He is not the next in line for a book, but I am not complaining about who is. Kristen Ashley really punched me in the gut a few times with Tabby and Shy. Let's do it again, Ms Ashley!
“May feel like you're falling', Tabby, but remember, I'm at the bottom ready to catch you.”

Reaper's Property by Joanna Wylde 3/5

Horse is a tattooed, motorcycle riding, hot wall of muscle. When he shows up at her brother's house, Marie is at a loss for what to do with him. Horse know exactly what he wants to do with Marie. It's rated NC-17. Marie just ditched her abusive ex-husband. What does she want with another man? Her brother is letting her live with him so she won't tell him who he can and can't be friends with. She doubts that whatever they are talking about is completely on the up and up. When her brother steals from the club, Marie pays the price. Shouldn't that make her feel bad or make her hate Horse? Marie just can't bring herself to dislike the man. When her brother's debt is paid, will she be asked to leave?
"You’re all mine, babe. Knew it the first time I saw you. Couldn’t give you up if I tried."
- Horse
Oh Horse, you are a naughty boy. That's okay. We like bad boys in the Underworld. Horse really wants Marie. He doesn't like hearing her say no. Why wouldn't he jump at the chance to have her at his mercy? Alpha males and motorcycle clubs go hand in hand. Given the story line, I expected Horse might turn out to be an Alph hole. An alpha male that crosses the line from protective to abusive. Horse was on his best behavior, mostly. I do not know if there will be any books following in this series or if it was a stand alone. I would like to read more of them.

Wilde Ride by Maegan Lynn Moores 4/5

Ella is the new high school teacher in a new town. Ella briefly met a local man last year, one she wants to know better. Ella already has his eye, and a few others. One of her admirers is anything but sweet. Ryder to the rescue. The school teacher and the bad boy biker. I laughed so much. Ella meets Ryder for the first time when she runs face first into a pole. Now there is a story to tell the kids.

Maegan Lynn Moores builds the sexual tension between Ryder and Ella. Ella did not always act how I thought she should. Let some people into her head that I felt she should have seen for the liars they are. Women, we are like that. We see with our hearts and not our eyes. As much as it may have made me want to yell at Ella, I would have reacted the same way. In that case, Ms Moores did an excellent job making her character someone the reader can relate to. Ella's best friend is up for a book next. I have read the teaser and it rocks.

Wild Riders Series (5 Titles to Date) by Jaci Burton 4/5

It has been years since I read these. I am not confident in my memory to give individual reviews of each book. I would not do them justice if I tried. I do know that I gave each of the books a 4/5 rating, and that is really good. If you like bikers, you will like the Wild Riders. It is a series worth reading.

Down and Dirty by Reese Madison 3/5

Carly is the bartender for a motorcycle club. She isn't interested in the men romantically, but enjoys their company. Carly's boss has a brother named Joe in the military. Joe has been reading about Carly in letters from his brother long enough to know he wants Carly. He stakes his claim immediately. Carly likes Joe, but does she trust him with her heart? She doesn't know him. He doesn't know her outside of letters. Is that enough to build forever on?

Joe is a bit too alpha male for me. Carly digs it, so I forgive him. After all, the book is about Joe and Carly, not Joe and Persephone. He shows up and carries Carly off. Doesn't do much asking, only telling. Carly has a checkered past. Secrets begin to come out of the closet and threaten to destroy what Joe and Carly are trying to build. The plot goes a little over the top. I wondered how I got some of the places I ended up. If you like a character, you are willing to overlook most plot cliff jumps. I was entertained by the book but did not love it.

Lone Rider by Lauren Bach 3/5

One of the few motorcycle club books I have read where the bikers are seriously bad dudes.
Tess is kidnapped by Dallas to protect her from his motorcycle brothers. Egads, do things deteriorate from here. Dallas is the lesser of evils to pick from. He is relatively nice to Tess and act like he genuinely wants to protect her. Tess has conflicting emotions about Dallas. He is nice and hot, but he also won't let her go. His friends are downright horrible. I stopped reading this book once, but picked it back up when I saw an important piece of info that really should be on the back cover.

Dallas is undercover. He's a cop. Not a bad guy. Not even named Dallas. Now I can read this book in peace. You might imagine Tess is a tad overwhelmed by all the information. She still has feelings for Not Dallas. She needs protection from the bad guys, still. Tess isn't the only one that needs protection but that is another spoiler. Entertaining, if you like the suspense and crime dramas, I recommend it.

Undeniable by Madeline Sheehan 4/5

A gritty love story, not for the faint of heart. Eva and Deuce's story spans years. This is good news because Eva is still in pigtails the first time she meets Deuce. He meets her again later and can tell she is going to be a beautiful woman. Thank the maker, Deuce is not a dirty old man so he waits for Eva to grow up. This is not a pretty flowers and pink hearts kind of romance. Non traditional romance is still romance! I like Eva and Deuce. This was one of the more believable stories. People, as we know, are messy. Eva and Deuce are messy, flawed, normal people. This is the first of three (maybe more?) books in a series. Will I be reading more of these unpretty romances by Madeline Sheehan? You bet your bookshelf I will.

Words to know

Every romance reader needs to know these key words and phrases. While some are purely for your information to understand the story, others were created to explain reoccurring phenomena. One such example of this phenomena is the angry penis. A word I very recently heard from my friend Kat, that made me laugh until I cried. The man wielding the angry penis is interested in angry sex. He may be punishing his lover for some wrong doing, seeking revenge, or just a prick.

I hope you enjoy the list. I hope that it is enlightening. I know I missed some. Please tell me if you know one that is not listed!

  • Alpha Male - Macho, Macho Man. Rambo is a good example. They are SEALS, Highland Warrior Lairds, Knights, Cops, Commandos, Bikers, etc.
  • AlphHole- "A critical term for an Alpha Male hero whose aggressive, forceful behaviour crosses the line from romantic to abusive. This can be a contentious issue in the romance community as one reader’s “protective” can be another reader’s “controlling.” Often the line comes down to personal taste" (Vail, 2012).
  • Angry Penis - Sex as punishment.
  • ARC - Advanced Reading Copy. Copy released by the publisher to specific readers before the book is released for mass distribution. Often this is a copy to be reviewed, a gift, a contest prize, or marketing tool.
  • B&D or B/D - Bondage and Discipline
  • BDSM - Bondage and Discipline Sadomasochism. Themes include dominance and submission, restraint, role playing, spanking, forced seduction, etc. Other fetishes and kink may be present such as toys.
  • Beta Male - The more sensitive man. An example would be Hugh Grant in every movie he makes.
  • Bodice Ripper - Usually a historical romance novel with passionate sex and sometimes violence. The classic, older titles are often lumped into this category. Some non readers believe that all romance novels are bodice rippers.
  • Bottom -  in reference to BDSM, B&D, B/D, S&M, D/s. The person in not control, receiving commands, or who receives the activity.
  • Chick Lit - Stories that typically feature modern women and any variety of issues. They cover a range of emotions from humor, to heartfelt  to tear jerker. These books are not always classified as a romance because the main characters relationship with friends and family are just as important as the romantic relationship. There may not even be a romantic aspect to the story at all.
  • DIK - Desert Isle Keeper. The books I want to be shipwreck with me on a deserted island.
  • DNF - Did Not Finish, for whatever reason.
  • Dominant - in reference to BDSM, B&D, B/D, S&M, D/s. The person in control, issuing commands, or who carries out the activity.
  • D/s - Dominance and Submission.
  • Duke of Slut- "The hero in historical romances with an extensive, unorthodox, and publicly known sexual history who explores a vast swath of the female population while miraculously remaining impervious to sexually transmitted diseases" (Vail, 2012).
  • Erotica - Heavy on the sex, usually very hot sex. BDSM, fetish, and more kinky titles will be found in the Erotica sub genre. The plot might be thinner or outrageous.
  • F/F - Sexual intercourse between two females.
  • F/F/M - Sexual intercourse between two females and a male, in which the females will have sexual interaction with each other as well as the male.
  • F/M/F - Sexual intercourse between two females and a male, in which the females will not have sexual interaction with each other.
  • F/M/M/M/M - One female and several men, at least more than two.
  • Gamma Males - "A newer hero term, reserved for heroes who are a mix of Beta and Alpha male types. The more common examples are the shy Beta who morphs into an aggressive, take-change Alpha when the heroine is threatened, or a highly-stressed Alpha who hides a softer, Beta side" (Vail, 2012).
  • Grinning like an idiot - When a book makes you grin so big while reading it, you look like an idiot.
  • H/h - Hero and Heroine.
  • HEA - Happily Ever After.
  • Head Hopping - Changing the point of view, who is telling the story, repeatedly.
  • Jumping the Shark - When a long running series goes right off the deep end and is no longer readable.
  • Keeper - A book that you will not be selling, lending, or otherwise allowing others to see/touch/harm because you liked it so much. The best of these are your DIK's.
  • LOL - Laugh out loud. Laughing out loud at the book, duh.
  • Mary Sue/Gary Stu - "A critical term reserved for badly-written protagonists who are too perfect—they are simply good at everything, everyone except the Bad Guys loves them, and they have no discernable character flaws. Mary Sues are generally disliked because, since they have no problems of their own, the conflicts they confront tend to be contrived. As well, with no flaws or quirks, many of them are simply not interesting" (Vail, 2012).
  • Menage -Sex between three people, any combination of gender applies.
  • M/F - Sex between one man and one woman.
  • M/M - Sex between two men.
  • M/F/M - Sex between two men and one female where the men will not be engaging in sex with each
  • other.
  • M/M/F- Sex between two men and one female where the men will have sexual interaction with each other.
  • New Adult - Recently emerged sub genre than sometimes encompasses the older end of YA and the younger end of Adult fiction. College age and young 20 somethings.
  • OTT - Over The Top. Jumping the shark, literary edition.
  • POV - Point Of View. Who is telling the story.
  • PNR - Paranormal Romance
  • Sci Fi - Science Fiction Romance
  • Sequel Baiting - "The superfluous presence or participation of secondary characters in series romances that is meant to advertise or generate interest in their upcoming novels rather than serve the story at hand" (Vail, 2012).
  • Sexy Times - When the H/H engage in any sexual interaction from foreplay to all the way.
  • Spoilers - Tell valuable plot points that might spoil a persons enjoyment of the book.
  • S&M - Sadism and Masochism.
  • Slut Shaming - Any time a female is punished for acting on her sexuality. For example, kissed a man and was forced to marry. Had sex and was cursed for being unpure.
  • Smut - Used both affectionately and derogatory towards erotica and romance.
  • Submissive -  in reference to BDSM, B&D, B/D, S&M, D/s. The person in not control, receiving commands, or who receives the activity.
  • Switch - in reference to BDSM, B&D, B/D, S&M, D/s. When the participants take turns being in control.
  • TBB - To Be Bought
  • TBR - To Be Read
  • Tear Jerker - The ones that make you sob.
  • Top - in reference to BDSM, B&D, B/D, S&M, D/s. The person in control, issuing commands, or who carries out the activity.
  • Trashing - Reviewing a book with extreme distaste.
  • TSTL - Too Stupid To Live. Characters typically found in a wallbanger.
  • TT - Time Travel
  • Wallbanger - A book that is so infuriating you beat it against a wall because that is as close as you can get to strangling the characters and/or author.
  • Wallpaper Historical - "A romance set in an historical time period that is either poorly, incorrectly, or only vaguely established. For instance, while skirts, corsets, balls, and King George may be mentioned, the protagonists of wallpaper historicals otherwise act the same as their contemporary counterparts, barring the occasional sword duel. These sorts of novels are deridingly called “wallpaper historicals” because the romantic historical setting is basically used to lend a “prettiness” to the story’s scenery without actually contributing to the story itself" (Vail, 2012).
  • WIP - Work In Progress
  • Woobies - "A term that refers to Romantically Tortured characters, who, in romance fiction at least, are nearly always male. Woobies tend to have one or more of these attributes: a dead wife or child, a murdered partner, a pronounced but (usually) not disfiguring scar, or an unexplained death in their past. Written well, a Woobie overcoming tragedy to be with the heroine can be lovely. A poorly-written Woobie can come off as a sadsack, however, or an author’s attempt to pardon a character’s extensive bad behaviour with a tragic past" (Vail, 2012).
  • YA - Young Adult Books. Young teens to college age.

Against the Wall by Rebecca Zanetti

Rebecca Zanetti writes another series I follow, so when I was this title I knew I wanted to read it. I think I like this series better! I am excited to find a new contemporary series to read. I look forward to reading all the books that follow this one. I am hoping for at least three more! Her Goodreads profile is available, as is a Facebook page.

Sophie Smith is city girl visiting Montana. She is surveying the land to design a golf course. Sophie works for her uncle and is a very talented artist. While checking out the land, she is almost trampled by a horse. Jake Lodge saves her. The tribal lawyer and cowboy is smitten with the city girl. He is determined to spend time with her. Sophie is determined to not get distracted by handsome men, especially ones that are trying to block her uncle's golf course. It would be for the best if they stayed away from one another, but when has the heart ever cared about what was best?

What I liked

Jake lays it all out on the table for Sophie. He is straightforward about his attraction. He doesn't pressure Sophie, gives her time to make her decision without his badgering her. He does supply her with some really good points in favor of being with him, but never goes too far. Jake is a man you can depend on, attentive, loyal, and fun. Sophie has a good head on her shoulders. She seemed easy to get along with. Someone you could sit down with, strike up a conversation like old friends. I am extremely talkative, this is a huge plus in my book. Ketchup, OMG! There is a scene in the diner with Sophie, her friend, and a bottle of ketchup. I wanted to cheer. You will too.

What I did not like

Sophie doesn't want to give up her independence and really, Jake doesn't declare his undying love early on so why would she want to move to Montana. Sensible girl. Me, I would have packed my bags and gone but I am an all in kind of girl. Is knowing something is going to happen a bad thing? It depends on the reader. I did not have a problem with a certain - wait! I can't tell you. Okay, something is mentioned early on, sort of a "What if this happened?" scenario. At that moment I pretty much knew it would happen. I was glad it happened! I know some people do not like that. Only things I can pick out that could be a gripe.

Her Russian Protector #1 and #2 by Roxie Rivera

Ivan (Book 1)

Erin needs to find her sister. She has gotten caught up in a dangerous situation and if Erin doesn't find her first, chances are she will end up dead. The only person in Houston that Erin can think of to help her is Ivan Markovic. The big, tattooed Russian owns and operates a mixed martial arts gym where he trains fighters. The rumor is that Ivan has connection to the Mob. Erin has it in good authority that there is truth to the rumors. Ivan wants to say no when Erin shows up in his gym. He knows the trouble her sister is in. It will be a headache, not to mention dangerous, to get mixed up with helping Erin. So why is he saying yes? Ivan cannot believe he agreed, but the need to protect Erin overpowers his good sense. If he doesn't step in, he knows Erin won't stop and the people after her sister will hurt Erin. If he doesn't protect his own heart, he may lose it to Erin.

What I liked
Ivan is intimidating but he is a big softie with Erin. An alpha male all the way but with a soft warm center for his girl. Who doesn't melt over that? Erin is a strong woman. A weak woman couldn't have strolled into a mob connected gym and ask for help. Sure, she was afraid. I said she was strong, not an idiot. Ivan hasn't had a lot of great things walk into his life. He recognizes Erin as a chance at real personal happiness. I like that he didn't strong arm her into a relationship with him even though he did not want to let her go. Ivan was supportive of Erin, even when she wasn't seeing things clearly over her sister.

What I didn't like

Erin's sister. She makes me want to reach into the book and slap her. Erin is a doormat for her sister. She feels the need to make up for the past and overlooks her deplorable behavior. Ivan gives Erin the strength to finally open her eyes and see the truth. I was glad to see Erin stand up for herself but I kind of wanted her to yell at her. Probably would have been counterproductive to the healing process, but she isn't my sister so I didn't care too much about that. For the story, it was the way to handle it.

Dimitri (Book 2)

Benny inherited the family bakery with her brother, Johnny. Instead of helping Benny, Johnny runs the streets with a dangerous gang. All of this is witnessed by the man who rents the apartment over the bakery, Dimitri. The former Russian Spetsnaz runs a security service. He can afford to live somewhere nicer, but he can't seem to leave Benny. When Johnny goes too far with the gang, Dimitri steps in to help Benny. It isn't long before they wind up in bed. Passion is like that, uncontrollable. Benny runs the risk of losing her bakery, her brother, and her heart. If she trusts herself to Dimitri, will it be worth the gamble?

What I liked

Benny and Dimitri have been crushing on each other, not realizing they could be together since it is mutual. The book doesn't waste time on the unrequited love angle. Dimitri is a patient man. That patience pays off with Benny. She has so much coming at her that it takes someone with a gentle hand to coax her out of her shell. Benny is a hard worker. She isn't going to let anyone walk in and step on what she has built. I liked that she didn't play games or allow anyone to steamroll her.

What I didn't like

Johnny. Of course, he was a pain. He is supposed to be a pain. Irritated me to no end. If we were supposed to want Johnny to take a short walk off a long pier, mission accomplished. Not much else bothered me.

Roxie Rivera has two more books to be published in the Her Russian Protector series. I will absolutely we buying them as Yuri and especially Nikolai intrigue me. When I picked up Ivan and Dimitri, I also purchased Seduced by the Loan Shark. It was a fun read. I have enjoyed all three of the books I bought and will be adding Roxie Rivera to the authors I follow. If you want to get to know Roxie Rivera you can check out her Goodreads page and her Facebook, in addition to her Official Website.

Lost in You (Petal, Georgia 2) by Lauren Dane

If Hades and I ever split, I am moving to Petal. So what if it is fictional. That is just a technicality  The place is a haven for handsome men. If you are a reader of Ms. Dane's other books then you have met the Chase boys. If you have not, trust me you want to meet them. Lost in you is  Lauren Dane's second book in the Petal, Georgia series. We get to hang out with Beth Murphy, who is my favorite of the extensive Murphy siblings. Beth is a quick wit and she practically jumps off the page. I started to read Lost in You, intending to read a few chapters but I devoured the whole book in one night.

Petal, Georgia is a charming little town where everybody knows everybody. Beth Murphy knows that everyone knowing your business isn't always a good thing, especially if you used to have a bad reputation. Beth's parents and living on the wrong side of the tracks has made the Murphy name less than sterling. It isn't   Beth's fault her parents were bad news. Some people in Petal don't see it that way. Joe Harris earned his reputation. Time in the military and the wisdom of age have taught him the error of his ways. He has returned to Petal to help his parents and take over as mechanic.

Beth was just his best friends little sister when Joe left. Now she is all grown up. Beth is stunningly beautiful and when she speaks she makes his head spin. Joe is determined that he is not going to cross the line. He wouldn't his best friend like that. Beth has other plans. She wants Joe. Her brother can get with the program or get over it later. Older brothers aren't the only problem. Joe has a lot on his plate with his parents. He wants Beth. He doesn't have the time to devote the amount of attention he feels Beth deserves. Joe and Beth are both stubborn. Their stubbornness will either help them stand together or tear them apart.

What I Liked

The way Beth talks. Beth is a master of words. Her witty repartee is delivered rapid fire. The people who know her are either used to it and able to keep up or left speechless trying to figure out what just happened. Beth is awesome. We all should have a friend like Beth. Joe, for the most part, is able to recognize and understand his personal feelings regarding Beth. He doesn't hide from them. I like a man who knows himself.

What I Didn't Like

Goodness. It was hard to read about Joe's family. His dad is struggling. His mom is trying to make it better but she can't. Seeking help is hard when the person who needs is most refuses it. It was heartbreaking to watch Joe's father fall apart.

Mate Set and His Purrfect Mate Reviews by Laurann Dohner

The Mating Heat Series is written by Laurann Dohner and consists of two books, so far. The third book is a work in progress. The series works around the idea that male werewolves go into heat just like the females. For all I know, this is true among real wolves of the non were variety. I didn't go looking for any research on the subject. The premise works for the book and that was all I cared about.

Mate Set (Mating Heat Book 1)

Mika is a human in a werewolf town. She is visiting her Uncle Omar. Unfortunately, mating season is in full swing. The males are all in sexual overdrive. Mika is a little naive having been protected by her uncle in the past and almost falls victim to a group of horny werewolves in a back alley. She is rescued by Grady who calls in the favor immediately. Once Mika gets a taste of what Grady has to offer she wishes she could have more time with the man.

Grady is a half breed and is hung up on not mating with a human. If he gives in the urge to have sex with Mika, he doubts he can stop himself from keeping her permanently. All it takes is one bite during sex and the deal is sealed. Grady decides to avoid her. Too bad Uncle Omar needs someone to watch over his niece. Grady becomes Mika's live in bodyguard. He is sure he can control himself. Mika is sure they are going to burn up the sheets.

It is inevitable that Mika and Grady will end up in bed, but will they resist the urge to make their union forever?

His Purrfect Mate (Mating Heat Book 2)

Shannon is a shifter, but has so little in her blood that she is unable to shift into her puma form. She is mostly a human with a little extra flair in her DNA. Other shifters can smell the cat in her. A group of werewolves kidnap her, intent on hunting and killing Shannon. Anton rescues Shannon from the top of a tree. Shannon thinks Anton may be the best looking man to ever walk to planet. Shannon may be a cat, but Anton's wolf wants her. With the mating heat riding high in his blood, Anton claims Shannon with a bite to protect her.

Anton is to be the pack alpha one day. He can't have a cat as his mate. Tell that to his heart. Shannon can't shake the feeling that Anton is the one either. She feels safe with him. So safe that any time she is in danger she climbs him like a tree. Shannon and Anton has many obstacles in their way. The pack doesn't approve. his family doesn't approve, a local puma pack wants Shannon for themselves, and they have to get over their own hidden insecurities.

With so many people in the way, can Shannon and Anton get it together?

What I like about this series

The heat! Goodness, they are hot. I laughed every time Anton was treed by Shannon. The hot factor was high but not at expense of the story. That can be hard to balance. Dohner paints a picture of two people that desperately want each other but  makes the connection realistic. I have read stories that feel like two people jumping in bed with no idea why other than something to do. It is hard to tell if the couple even likes each other very much in those. You expect them to shake hands and say "Well, thanks. See ya later!" when it is over. Dohner's characters get a believable HEA. To sum it up, lots of heat + lots of character = lots of story.

What I do not like about this series

The werewolves sometimes half shift. Not all furry but you would be able to see some definite wolfish traits pop through. This happens the most when emotions are running high such as sex and anger. I am leery by any animal/human sexual interaction. I read a book in the past that was full out animal having sex with a woman and it was super skeevy. When I read a story like Laurann's, I get nervous what I will encounter. Happy to report there was no bestiality. Thank God.

Criminy Stain sends his love.

I recently returned from a trip and found some goodies waiting for me at home. Loot from Delilah S. Dawson. The package held a copy of her new release Wicked As She Wants, two bookmarks, two bracelets, and a small pink notebook with Delilah's signature inside and a bludbunny drawn on the cover. Did I do a happy dance? Um, yeah...are you nuts? Of course I rejoiced! Review of Wicked As She Wants to come.

The Loot!

Author Spotlight: Laurann Dohner

Laurann Dohner writes hot books. Scorching, sizzling, hot books. I first ran across her books less than a year ago. I have read all 25 titles she has published. I couldn't help myself. Once I read one I wanted to read another, then another. There is no shortage of titles to choose from if you want to read a Laurann Dohner publication. They should come with a warning: May cause you to drop everything and read until you run out of books.

A Little About the Author

Ms. Dohner resides in Nevada with her husband and has four children. She says on her website that she did not always know she wanted to write.
"I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstockings, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days." - Laurann Dohner
Dohner's love of books never waned even as her taste in material grew. She eventually found her way to romance. Dohner wrote poetry and later short stories but did not write her first book until later.

"I started to write my first book after I read a real bomb of one that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best. I though...I could do better!" - Laurann Dohner
That first book was written in early 1990's and Dohner claims it may never be published. It did spawn a series, even if it didn't completely make her happy in its finished state. In the beginning, she was writing for fun. She kept writing for fun until 2009 when she decided to go for it. Ral's Woman, which is her first Sci Fi romance, was the novel. With some small alterations, Ellorascave accepted it!

"It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy. It's a dream come true." - Laurann Dohner
Ms. Dohner likes a good series. She has built her career and a fan following on the various series she has written.  Currently, Ms. Dohner writes five different series.

  • Cyborg Seduction- 7 books, to date. 8th is a work in progress and subject to change. Sci Fi Romance featuring Cyborgs (duh).
  • Zorn Warriors- 4 books, to date. 5th, 6th, and 7th are a work in progress and subject to change. Sci Fi romance. Alien humanoid race of warrior and Earth women.
  • Riding the Reins- 2 books, to date. 3rd is a work in progress and subject to change. Contemporary romance. Hot ranchers and rodeo riders.
  • Mating Heat - 2 books, to date, 3rd is a work in progress and subject to change. Paranormal romance. Werewolves and other shifters
  • New Species - 10 books, to date. 11th and 12th are a work in progress and subject to change. Paranormal or Sci Fi romance? Not sure how to classify. I lean towards paranormal. Genetically altered humanoid/animal hybrids trying to make a life after being freed from laboratories.
I have read all of the books in each of the series listed above. I always look forward to the next book she publishes. There are some commonalities in her writing. Like any author, she has a style and a voice that is distinctive to her. If you pick up one of her books and like it, chances are you will soon have read them all like me. I highly recommend starting at the beginning of a series. You won't be totally lost if you do not, but you will be missing out. Laurann Dohner is easily one of my favorite authors.

King of the Unblessed by Michelle M. Pillow

I have read this book several times. It is book one in the Realm Immortal trilogy.  I L-O-V-E it. You know why? Because it is a grown up "How Labyrinth Should Have Ended" story. You remember Labyrinth, don't you? Jennifer Connolly as Sara, David Bowie as the Goblin King, Jareth, in the tightest pants ever made? I can remember when I was little, I wanted Sara to marry Jareth. Somehow, I felt like this was supposed to be a love story. Well guess what. it was. They changed it when 14 year old Jennifer Connolly was cast as the lead. (I have a whole post planned about how Labyrinth could have been a HOT movie if an adult was cast instead of a child.) On to the book review.

Merrick is the King of the Unblessed. He isn't what you would call an evil man but he isn't butterflies and kittens either. There cannot be day without night, but the dark isn't evil. The opposite side of the coin is necessary. Merrick is fascinated by Lady Juliana of Bellemare. Juliana yearns for an adventure but is set to be married to an old family friend in days. Merrick offers her adventure in a way she cannot refuse and still live with her conscience. In the Realm of the Immortals, things are not what they seem. Looking with your eyes is deceiving. Juliana must learn to see beyond what her eyes show her if she is ever going to find happiness with Merrick. Can there be happiness with a man like Merrick?

What I Liked

Merrick is intense. He doesn't deal in half measures. If he wants something, he will have it or he will destroy it so no one else can have it. He isn't some one to be trifled with. The relationship between Merrick and Juliana is all about possessiveness. Is that a bad thing? I say no. One of my favorite quotes is "I am my Beloveds and my Beloved is mine." That is from the bible, folks. Merrick wants to own Juliana. He doesn't want to stifle her of smother her because that would change who she is. He wants to call her his unconditionally. He is fine with being hers, in return.

Ms Pillow is very true to the nature of Merrick. He is who he is. There are never going to be words of tender endearments from him, but if you listen he does express his love. I liked the parallels to Labyrinth immensely. Two separate scenes are perfect mirrors of Sara/Jareth. One, when he tells Juliana to "Beg me, obey me, and I will be your slave." (Beg, woman!  For the love of all that is good, beg!). The other is when he tells Juliana that he has "turned the world upside for you. I move the stars for no one." The book in now way is a direct rewrite of the Labyrinth. It just has a nice Labyrinth flavor.

What I didn't like

Um, I didn't like that it ended?

But wait! It didn't end. Book three, The Stone Queen, is also about Merrick and Juliana.

Forbidden Fruit Rating

Michelle M. Pillow can be found on Facebook, Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Raven, which she co owns with her BFF, Mandy Roth. She also has a YouTube channel and a Blog. I recommend getting to know her. She is very active on her facebook site. You can talk with her often and she is hilarious. If you follow Mandy Roth as well you are in for a real treat, The duo have absolutely delightful banter. This is just one of many titles available by Michelle M. Pillow. I also highly recommend her Dragon Lords series and her Lords of the Var series.

Interview with Delilah S. Dawson!

When Delilah S. Dawson offered up interviews on her Facebook page, I jumped at the chance. I loved her book Wicked as They Come. After my review of Wicked as They Come, I received a message from Ms. Dawson that she isn't done with Tish and Criminy, so my closure issue will be resolved. Thank you, Delilah!! Without further ado, because you didn't click on the interview to listen to me, meet Delilah S. Dawson. Author, Steam punk princess, trapeze woman.

*The Genesis Round*

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I wrote my first book at age 6, and it was about having my tonsils removed. But at some point, I got the idea that you had to be specially chosen by the muse to write a book, that it was a calling like being a doctor or a priest. So although I wrote poetry in high school and college, it never occurred to me that I might be able to write an actual book until after my second child was born and I was going slightly crazy with sleep deprivation.

What books have most influenced your life most?

The Earth's Children series by Jean Auel and the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon taught me that a book could have amazing characters, deep research, fascinating storytelling, and sex scenes, that romance wasn't just fluff and history wasn't boring. Stephen King is also a major influence.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I write whatever story demands to be written-- or is under deadline. I start with an idea, chew on it for a while, and don't start writing until I have a clear picture of the main characters, the signposts on the story road, and the ending. Then I start writing on page one and write the first draft straight through without stopping.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Revision! I take 3 months to write a book and a year to edit and polish it.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

My agent, Kate McKean, has taught me so much about looking at my work critically and learning what to keep and what to lose.

*The Philosophy Round*

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Each book ends up having some sort of theme, although I don't set out to teach a lesson. With Wicked as They Come, the message was that things worth having don't come easy. And with this e-novella, The Peculiar Pets of Miss Pleasance, the message is that you can't hide away after heartbreak; you have to open yourself up to possibility.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you for reading my books! That's an author's greatest hope-- that people will read the books and take something away from them, even if it's just a smile.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

Tons. Mainly, tenacity. You can't give up on a book or trying to get an agent. You have to keep getting better and upping your game.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Always! That's why I don't read them after they're printed.

How do you come up with the title?

For The Peculiar Pets of Miss Pleasance, I knew I wanted something alliterative to go with the first e-novella, The Mysterious Madam Morpho. Since the book was about a pet shop, which is rather peculiar in the world of Sang, I just needed to find a last name that began with a P. In my world, the humans typically have positive last names (Goodwill, Joy, Pleasance) while the Bludmen (who are blood drinkers) have negative names (Stain, Scowl, Haggard). So Pleasance was a good fit.

*The Shameless Display of Affection Round*

Criminy Stain was gorgeous on the cover. I wanted to frame him but alas, Hades gets jealous easy. Was he modeled after anyone? Someone we could kidnap, per chance?
Meet my 2nd husband ;0)
Thanks! In my mind, he acts like a mix of Spike from Buffy and Captain Jack Sparrow, and he looks like a mix of Johnny Depp and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, thin and wiry with long, dark hair. The book cover was based on a photograph and manipulated by artist Tony Mauro, who does amazing work I think. Turns out the coat is real; he got it on Ebay! And the hero of The Peculiar Pets of Miss Pleasance was utterly based on the idea of Thor in a kilt. Thor in a kilt? I think my brain just exploded.

I saw you on the trapeze! How awesome was that? What inspired you to go for a swing?

It was AMAZING, totally one of those bucket list items. I've always wanted to do it, and on my recent trip to NYC, my editor's assistant, Parisa, offered to take me to STREB NYC where she works her trapeze magic. They were so sweet, and I was amazed at what I was able to do in just two hours.

Did you have a love of the circus before or after your book?

Always! But more the idea of the dark carnival, not so much the modern circus with clowns and animals undergoing ill treatment. That's why Criminy's Clockwork Carnival only has clockwork animals. :) I love that! Animal mistreatment is a serious issue. I am glad there will be no issues in Criminy's Clockork Carnival.

Not only are you a talented writer, but you are also gorgeous. I can say this with confidence as Hades saw your picture over my shoulder and asked who the hot chick was.  Not a question, just shameless hero worship ;0)

Aw, thanks! I'll take it! <3

*The Proverbial Round*

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I have too many to ever pick just one. My favorite books right now are by Cassandra Clare-- the Infernal Devices and Mortal Instruments series. I read Clockwork Princess in two days and cried my eyes out. I also love Meljean Brook, Deanna Raybourn, and Stephanie Perkins. I love books that are a little dark, have a sense of humor, and tell a compelling story.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

I recently read DEAD THINGS by Stephen Blackmoore and was riveted. I don't normally read pulp-style books, but it was terse, tight, and fun.

What book are you reading now?

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Never give up! And read Chuck Wendig's blog every day.
